—Origin of the Gotokuji Temple Lucky Cat—
Gotokuji Temple is a small, historic temple located in the western suburbs of Tokyo, about 10 stations away from Shibuya. It is famously known as the birthplace of Japan’s Maneki Neko (beckoning cat).
During the Edo period, a Shogun once passed by this temple when a cat beckoned him to come inside. As soon as he entered, a heavy storm struck outside. Grateful that the cat had saved him from danger, the Shogun made Gotokuji his family’s temple and continued to support its growth.
Ever since, visitors who have their wishes granted bring Maneki Neko figurines to the temple as an offering of thanks.
